My CT’s don’t really have a set routine for ending class. Whenever they are both doing any type of lab or hands on activity that requires a number of materials they always make sure to end their lessons about 10 minutes early so that the students can clean up. When they have a regular class they both usually end about five minutes early. During this dead time students usually just sit at their desks and talk amongst themselves until the class period is over. Also during this time it allows for students to go up to the teacher and ask questions if something isn’t clear or talk to them if they have any concerns. It’s pretty rare for them to teach up until the last second of class.

I think that when you are doing a lesson or an activity that requires students to use various materials it is important to plan out your time so students have time to clean up. I don’t know if I will set an ending class routine. But I will definitely plan my lessons so that materials and other things can be cleaned up and put away before the next class walks in. I also think having a small period of free time is good as long as the students don’t take advantage of it. Towards the end of the class the students are usually more fixated on the clock then what you are teaching. So even if you taught the class up until the last second of the period, the students probably tuned out about five to ten minutes ago.
